The middle of winter can be a difficult time to find energy, keep up a good mood and enjoy the day to day activities of winter in Minnesota. To manage the winter blues, try this activity: Picture your favorite warm and sunny place. Perhaps it's a beach or mountain side or forest path. Close your eyes and picture in as much detail as you can, this favorite place. Imagine the warmth of the sun on your face and shoulders, imagine a warm breeze, see in your minds all the sights of this beautiful place. Hear in your mind the sounds of this place whether it's birds chirping, the ocean waves or the wind in the trees. Take several deep breaths in of the fresh air and feel your body and mind rejuvinated.
In our fast paced society it is often difficult to find the time to relax and find inner peace. Mindfulness, which has become popular in the psychology field, has it's origins with the Buddist monks. Buddist monks live mindfully. Most of American culture pushes multi-tasking. Multi-tasking can be seen as the opposite of mindfulness. Often multi-tasking is less efficient than mindfully completing a task! Psychology has found mindfulness a useful tool for most people because of the calm and peace it brings when practiced daily. Most of us will not be able to go through our entire day being mindful of all that we do but we can take a few minutes a day for a mindfulness activity and notice the changes that transpire!
Today's Activity: Find 5 minutes in a quiet, comfotable place for yourself. You may be sitting, laying down, inside or outside. It really is up to you! Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, noticing how the air feels coming into your body and as it leaves. Then, when you are ready, imagine one of your favorite places to be...a beach, a lake shore, the forest, a favorite room in your house, a favorite building you have visited, it can be anywhere. As your eyes are closed and you're breathing deeply, imagine in your mind all the sites, sounds, smells and feelings of this favorite place. Allow yourself to get lost in your favorite place! When you have been in this place long enough, return your senses to your current surrondings. I hope you find tranquility in your favorite place!
